It was quite the drive, but then, all things in Texas are. I was a little worried about rush hour traffic. We left at 8:30 and drove down IH-35. But, surprisingly, it was not bad at all! Only a little bit of a hiccup at the upper/lower deck split. We made it down to Circle-R at 10am. Since we were the first ones there, and there were no well defined parking spots, John made one up. Only to be yelled at by one of the employees.

After golfing, we went out to get lunch. Circle-R is in the middle of nowhere. So we drove into town. I spotted a “New Orleans Style Restaurant” in Dripping Springs and told John to pull in. It was Orgeron’s Restaurant. We both had the stewed okra with shrimp and andouille sausage. It was excellent! The stock was thick and rich and flavourful. Highly recommended…

Expand the entry to see each hole and more…

Here is the map of the course. As you can see, there are two creeks, one pond, and a waterfall that the course is designed around. Only Wimberly has been in a severe drought. So everything was bone dry.

Hole one starts next to the pro shop. It is tight next to the blue tees (which are the longest and what we used the whole time) and is 549 feet long. Both John and myself both hit the tree on the right. Stupid tree. So we mulliganed and our next throws were better…

Hole 2 is an even tighter throw. Not only do you have trees on both sides, but also on the tops and bottoms as well. I threw conservatively for that one and made it through. It is also a short hole (you can see Gravitt standing off in the distance next to the basket) at 266 feet.

Hole 3 is a long hole (453 feet). While not as tight as the previous two holes, there is not much leeway to the sides.

Hole 4 is short (342 feet) and in a wooded section.

Hole 5 is even shorter (248 feet) and is a tight tunnel with trees all around you.

I made a great first throw and landed close to the tee. But I was behind trees. Fortunately, I made a great putt to birdie the hole! John also birdied this hole (but his first throw was better than mine).

Hole 6 is another short hole at 232 feet. It is also one of only two holes where all three tees are at the same spot. Even though it is close, it is a tough hole. You throw across the creek into a short “green.” And there is a waterfall right behind the hole. Sadly everything is dry.

Hole 8 is a long hole at 451 feet. It is tough and runs along the river. Trees are on your left. You need to throw a shot that curves to the right. But beware, because you have to cross the river and throw uphill to the goal.

Hole 9 is another short hole at 261. It is the other hole where all three tees are at the same spot. You have to throw up a hill to reach the goal. This robs distance from your throw. Trees also protect the goal.

We are on the back nine now and we start off with a doozy. A nice, long, 878 feet throw. You cant even see the basket from here. But after a couple of throws you finally get a sense of where the basket is.

Hole 11 is a break from the previous hole at 230 feet. Another scenic hole with a water challenge. On this hole, they offer three levels of difficulty by moving the tees more and more to the left. Our tees were the hardest of course. You have trees to avoid. But the real challenge is the lake that you must throw over. It is such a shame that the lake was dry.

I had a beautiful throw. Right on the hill and next to the basket. Johns second throw lands close to my first.

I forgot to take hole 18’s tee picture. It is a long and meandering hole. I threw close to the lake where 17 was. And John took a risky shot at the trees. We both kept throwing into the trees for the entire lenght. John had lost his cammo disc for a while. I went ahead and finished at what I thought was the basket for 18 (it was 3’s basket).

John and I took a road trip to Circle R Disc Golf Ranch out in Wimberly Texas.
