Construction at OSPW

Today, the meetup group met at Old Settler’s Park. We played the winter variant since the course is shorter and therefore less imposing to newcomers. I was surprised with the signs of new construction going on here. They took out half of the parking lot for construction vehicles.

fencing

And they fenced off a section of the park. But it seems that they respected the disc golfers and make the area around the basket accessible. Which is nice. But they did not realize that the tee is at the top of the path off in the distance. So they didn’t need to change the fencing at all.

I do wonder how much construction is going on here and what the final result will be.

John behind trees

The meetup group went to the Rivery this week. Since this course is rarely groomed, we thought that the dead time during winter would make it easier. We met a new player, Ken, who throws sidearms.

all four shots are close

On one hole, all four of our approach shots hit the same group of trees and landed together…

best shot on hole 1

Only two of us today for disc golf. The weather was cold and windy and I had to use gloves for most of the day. On hole 1, I had my best first throw eva! Although it didn’t look like it in mid-flight.

John showed me Jott by placing a call and leaving a short voice message. In a couple of minutes, I read an email on my iPhone that said “Nice party, great short(?) man, catch you later.” What geeks! But the speech-to-text translation was not very successful. It should have read “Nice birdie! Great shot man, catch you later.”

Jon high in the tree

This was the first time Jon has been played with us in a while now. First, he broke his hand but wouldn’t say how he broke it (my guess is a with a Wii). Then, he broke his foot. I think its been like five months since he has played.

Well, I put him to use and got him to climb a tree and rescue my disk.

John retrieves a disc

Of course, John (who is severely overdressed for this warm day) lost a disc in a tree also.

Hole 3

I had a good practice throw on hole 3. Close enough for a birdie.

The wind was brutal today! And the discs performed strangely, if they flew on target at all.

John in tree

With our third meeting of the meetup group, no one else showed up. Not too surprising, I guess. The meetup people are rather flakey. John started off by throwing his second throw into the tree…

car in field

How odd. Someone parked their car in the middle of the field. I wonder why?

Mistle toe

This ball of Mistletoe is quite heavy! It is almost going to rip that branch down. John and I maintained our separate ways around that obstacle.

Hole 8

On hole 8, I had a great throw! But could not convert it into a birdie.

Almost Ace

I had my first almost ace today at the Lutheran Church on hole 3. My throw hit the chains of the basket and bounced out. Wah! So close. I wonder if a double set of chains would have grabbed that disc?

Hole 2

Today was the second week of the meetup disc golf. And we went to the same place again! Sigh. There are many, many disc golf courses around Austin. Why keep coming to the same place? I wanted to go down to Pease, but John was tied to Cat Hollow.

Supposedly, someone was supposed to show up. But they never did. So we played alone. I had a pretty good throw on hole 2.

Hole 16

John created another meetup group for disc golf. I guess that the RRGDG group fell apart for him. This has some pros and cons. The pros are I know everyone in RRGDG and they are all good disc golfers. The cons are this meetup group has a lot of people who only come one time or they are very new to disc golf.

Today, we had Robin who is new to disc golf and a dam inspector (and coincidently, news8austin is running an expose on the state of our dams) and Tony who has been playing disc golf for a while and prefers to run the course while playing.

Afterwards, we went to Chuy’s for lunch.

Hole 2

John and I played at the Old Settler’s Park Winter course. But we didn’t have enough time to finish it. First Friday Fluff was on later tonight and John had to leave early to prepare.

Hole 18 at Lions Park

I took this Friday off. I have 6 unclaimed vacation days and want to use them for beautiful days (or at least as beautiful as Texas can get in the winter). Today was one of them. It was warm and overcast out. So I headed up to Temple to photograph the two disc golf courses they have up there. There is a course in Lions Park and one in South Temple Community Park.
