Met Center

Jon and I took a vacation day off work for a disc golf road trip. We went to a new course down near the airport called the Metcenter. The course is really long and tough. And, since this used to be a pasture, it had rather rough and dimply ground. Most holes had two tees and had huge areas that were out of bounds (mostly from water hazards). We thought that, since this was a Friday, that the course would be empty. But, nope. Apparently most disc golfers are slackers. Which makes sense since they drink and smoke weed when they play.

Fire hydrant

I like how there was an old fire hydrant out in the middle of nowhere!

Patsy's cafe
Independence Brewing Co.

We ate lunch at Patsy’s Cowgirl Cafe. Which served Independence Brewing Company’s beer. And had some cool looking artwork outside.

Hole 6

After lunch, we headed to the Travis County East Metropolitan Park. Which holds another tough course. Although I did get one birdie on hole 6.

Moat

As an example of how tough this course is, there is one hole that has an island where the basket is located. With a six foot moat around it. Needless to say, we were a bit short on that one…

Jon

Jon and I played at Old Settler’s Park today. It was beautiful out. Although the ground was still damp out from the previous rain. And, unfortunately, I had forgotten to bring my towel with me. Sigh.

Loose dog

A loose dog interrupted us on hole 11. He didn’t stop to greet us and just kept running. I wonder what his goal was.

Juniors

We ate at Juniors Grill in downtown Round Rock. Which was not bad. They even cooked their burger medium rare for me.

Construction on Brushy Creek 9

It seems that there is some construction going on at Brushy Creek. And it is getting awfully close to the disc golf course…

Water

And, with the recent rains, there is finally water on the course! At least in the creek beds. Which makes it all the more challenging!

Good throw hole 3
Nick

We played at Wilco today. The original plan was Old Settler’s Park, but we didn’t know that the 2009 Outlaw Trail Cycling Tour was going on today and that the entire park would be closed. Fortunately, Wilco is close.

I also had a good first throw on hole 3. For some reason, this is a hard throw for me around a large wall of brush.

Poker Dominion
Dominion

After the round, we ate at Fuddruckers. Nick brought his three metal briefcases of poker chips with him which was actually the game of Dominion.

Disc Golf sign #1
Disc Golf sign #2

It seems someone made a sign for the course at Wilco. And this was the second attempt.

Dragon Fly

I like the use of camouflage for the Dragon Fly.

Mosquito bite

The mosquitoes were out today. Man, that thing was full of my blood!

Hole 12

I got one birdie on hole 12.

Fungus

Sadly, a lot of trees have dies around here. And now they are food for fungus…

Ants

And ants are still around here as well. I like how there was a line of ant-hills that led towards the basket.

Ace Race 2009

signup

I was a little worried when I browsed the Ace Race site and only saw events for Waco or San Antonio. Not only that, but I couldn’t attend them because I would be traveling to Florida then. But there was no worries, they did indeed hold one in Austin that I could attend.

lost disc

Jon and I practiced a little bit before the event. Unfortunately, I had thrown one of my two discs (you can only use the two special Ace race discs) into the brush. We must have spent twenty minutes looking for it. And I was almost ready to call it lost. But I spotted it!

tournament

I had fun again at the tournament. You only receive one throw for each basket. The only thing that counts is if it goes in the basket (ace) or if it hits any part of the basket or pole (metal). Unfortunately, I did not hit anything. And only got close once (or at least it looked close from the angle I was at).

pecan street festival
Casino El Camino

For lunch, we decided on some burgers at Casino El Camino. Their hamburgers are pretty good. But I do wish that they would have a better quality of bun than the cheap white bread burger bun. And it seems that the Pecan Street Festival was going on at the same time.

chihuahua cart

As we were walking to the car, I spotted a little Chihuahua dog pulling a cart behind it. I don’t know what the deal was with that setup…

More trees taken down

We went to Old Settler’s park for some disc golf today. I was quite sad to see even more trees taken down. The years of drought have taken their toll. I really hope they plant new tress to replace them.

Outlaw singles

Fortunately, we missed the Outlaw Singles tournament. There wasn’t anyone out on the field except us.

Lost disc

Jon lost his disc in the trees on hole 4. Can you spot it?

Watering a tree with ice

Apparently, it is so hot out here, that you need to water the trees with ice. But it was probably just discarded from a cooler for the Outlaw Singles tournament cleanup.

New mando signs

I like how they used towels to mark a temporary mando. Unfortunately, these trees are dead and will probably be cut down eventually.

Birdie #1
Birdie #2

I got one easy birdie on the “B” hole. And another one on hole 12.

La Selva

And, of course, we ended with a trip to La Selva.

hedge balls

We went down to Leander for some disc golf today. Man, with the recent rains, this place is overgrown! And the Hedge Balls were fruiting as well. Jon took some home for insect control.

overgrown field

It was hard to tell where the field is supposed to be and where the rough begins. It was all rough today.

In the water #1
Int the water #2

It was also rough when we threw our discs in the water. Which was in abundance today.

birdie

I did make one birdie today though.

Burger Central #1
Burger Central #2

We stopped by Burger Central for lunch afterwards. I was hopeful. The had pictures of what meat looks like when it is cooked rare and medium rare (as well as the other degrees). So I ordered a burger with blue cheese cooked “blue” (or rare). Unfortunately, it was cooked well done. And they forget the sweet potato fries as well. I guess the new waitress was partly to blame since she was having a meltdown. But I wouldn’t come back here to try it out again.

Early start

Jon and I are attending the Blue Skies Over Texas disc golf tournament. We met pretty early at Starbucks to car pool down there.

Score Card

The unique thing about this tournament is that we play Mary Moore Seawright course twice. For the first time, we play it normally. And then, after lunch, we play it in reverse. The tees are placed where the baskets normally are and vice versa. Notice the backward spelling for the second round on the score card?

Birdie #1
Birdie #2

We practiced a little bit before the tournament started and I got a couple of birdies. An auspicious start indeed.

I had fun at the tournament. The only negative thing about the day was that it was quite hot out there. I must have drank four liters of liquid during the day. It was also dry and dusty. So when I finally got home and showered, the water was running dark brown.

Tree down #1

I went to Old Settler’s Park for some disc golf today. It looks like another tree is down.

Tree down #2

And two more trees were removed on the hill. Sadly, with these mando trees gone, the hole is much easier. So someone moved the tee to a new location.

New tee?

And is there a new tee for the winter variant?

Kelli

Apparently, there is a new Kelli attraction in the park.

Birdie

I finally got a birdie on hole 16. Leaving me +2 for the round.

Cool off

After a hot round, I cooled off at La Selva. Mmm, agua fresca and Mexican ice cream…
